This increases your risk for heavier use and abuse of alcohol. Alcohol has also been found in preliminary studies to decrease blood flow to the spinal cord, reducing your body\u2019s ability to heal.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3223\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3223\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3223\" src=\"https:\/\/comprehensivespine.weillcornell.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/weaver-joshua-150x150-1.png\" alt=\"Dr. Joshua Weaver\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3223\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Joshua Weaver<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Eat a healthy diet<br \/>\n<\/strong>Diets high in sugar, refined carbohydrates and red meat cause chronic inflammation. Many patients may have spinal stenosis on imaging, but it\u2019s really inflammation that is causing their back symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>A healthy diet that includes lots of organic fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats and healthy fats, such as olive oil, can help reduce inflammation and pain in your body. A Mediterranean diet is an example. When you improve your diet, you may notice enough significant functional improvement to eliminate the need for any of our interventions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Maintain a healthy body weight<br \/>\n<\/strong>Your weight plays a significant role in your spine\u2019s health. For every pound of extra weight in your abdomen, your lower back takes on about seven to 10 pounds.
